What an overnight Bybit perpetual position really costs you
A bedtime routine for Bybit perpetual traders: read the funding rate and countdown, count the settlements you will sleep through, and set exits you understand before logging off.
Bybit | the reader's region | the reader's funding currency | independent comparison and evidence
The usual story goes like this. You open a position in the evening, the price barely moves overnight, and yet the balance in the morning is lower than you expected. Nothing broke; you simply slept through one or more funding settlements. On Bybit, funding is exchanged between longs and shorts at fixed intervals on perpetual contracts, and the rate can change from one interval to the next. A two-minute routine before bed is enough to know roughly what to expect.
Two numbers to read before bed
On the Bybit trading screen of your perpetual contract, the funding rate and the countdown to the next settlement sit near the contract name at the top. Read both. The rate tells you the direction and the size of the payment per settlement, and the countdown tells you when the next one happens. Some contracts settle more often than others, so check the interval in the contract details rather than assuming every pair works the same way.
Count the settlements you will sleep through
Work out when you expect to look at the position again and count how many settlements fall in between. If the rate is positive, longs pay shorts; if it is negative, shorts pay longs. Multiply in your head by the size of the position, not by the margin you put up, because funding is calculated on the full position value. If that rough total is large next to the profit you hope to make, the trade may not be worth holding overnight at this size.
Make the position survivable without you
Funding is usually small next to a liquidation, so the more important question is whether the position can survive a sharp move while you are asleep. Check the estimated liquidation price, consider lowering leverage, and decide whether you are in isolated or cross margin. Set a stop loss and take profit you actually understand, and turn on notifications in the Bybit app so a large move wakes your phone instead of surprising you at breakfast.
The morning review
Open the funding history in Bybit and match each settlement to the time it happened. Separate three things in your notes: trading fees, funding paid or received, and the effect of the price move. Traders who lump these together tend to blame the wrong cause. If funding keeps eating into overnight trades, the fix may be closing before the main settlement or holding a smaller size rather than changing your whole strategy.

Scenario checkpoint
- Read the funding rate and countdown on the Bybit contract screen before you sleep.
- Count the settlements until you will next check, using full position value.
- Check liquidation price, margin mode and leverage, then set exits and alerts.
- In the morning, separate fees, funding and price effect in your review notes.
