Bybit Unified Trading Account: How Shared Margin Changes Your Futures Risk

Guides · 2026-10-14

Bybit's unified trading account combines spot, derivatives and options in a single wallet. That brings convenience: profits and collateral are shared, and you no longer shuffle funds between separate accounts. It also changes the risk picture in a way many users miss. Coins you think of as long-term spot holdings may now be counted as collateral for a leveraged position, and a bad trade can draw on them. Understanding this is the first job for anyone reviewing the account type honestly.

How shared collateral works

In the unified account, eligible assets count towards your margin balance, often with a haircut that reduces their collateral value. When you open a derivatives position in cross margin mode, that combined balance supports it. If the position loses, the margin balance falls and, in extreme cases, Bybit can liquidate positions or convert collateral to cover the shortfall, as described in the help centre.

Read the account maintenance margin rate

The unified account overview shows an account-level maintenance margin rate. As it rises towards the threshold Bybit lists, the account approaches liquidation. Check this figure every time you open or add to a position. A sharp fall in a coin you hold as collateral raises the rate even if your futures trade has not moved, which surprises people who only watch the position itself. Setting a price alert on your largest collateral asset gives early warning. A single position can look comfortable on its own while the account as a whole is stretched.

Ways to cap the exposure

Use isolated margin on derivatives positions so each one is limited to the margin you assign. Keep long-term holdings outside the unified account, for example in the funding account or a separate sub-account, so they cannot be pulled in as collateral. Lower leverage and attach stop losses. Review the collateral settings page, where some assets can be excluded from collateral.

Review verdict

The unified account is efficient for active traders who understand portfolio margin. For casual users who mainly hold spot and occasionally try futures, it can blur the line between savings and speculation. Bybit documents the mechanics clearly in its help centre; read those pages, including the collateral value ratios, before trading in it.
