Least privilege and clear labels for every new Bybit API key

Guides · 2026-09-30

API keys are often created in a hurry: a tool asks for one, you generate it, tick whatever permissions make the error message go away and name it something like test or bot. Months later, nobody remembers what each key does or who has it. Least privilege and clear labels fix both problems. Each key gets only the permissions its tool needs, and its name records what it is for and when it was made. This review describes how to apply those principles on Bybit, how to restrict and store keys, and how to retire them on a schedule. Option names may change, so follow the Bybit help centre for exact steps.

Start from the minimum

Before creating a key, write down what the tool must do. A portfolio tracker needs read access only. A trading bot needs order permissions but almost never withdrawal rights. Enable exactly those permissions and nothing else. If the tool fails, read its documentation to see which permission it needs, rather than enabling everything to make the error disappear.

Labels that explain themselves

Name each key with the tool, its purpose and the creation date, for example tracker read-only plus the month. Create a separate key per tool. When you review the list later, the names tell you immediately what each key is for and whether it is still needed, and you can delete one without affecting the others.

Restrict and store

Where Bybit allows it, bind the key to the IP address of the server running the tool, so a leaked key is useless elsewhere. Store the secret in a password manager or protected configuration, never in chats, emails or screenshots. If you suspect exposure, delete the key immediately and create a replacement with the same minimal permissions.

Retire on schedule

Set a reminder to review your keys monthly. Delete keys for tools you no longer use, confirm that permissions are still minimal and compare account activity with what each tool should be doing. If you see an order you did not expect, disable the key, change your password and contact official support through the app. A tidy key list is one of the cheapest security wins available, and it takes only minutes each month.

Risk boundary: Bybit Independent Review

Digital assets are volatile and derivatives can amplify losses. This website has no login, wallet connection, deposit form or customer-support chat. A referral link only records attribution; it does not guarantee access, pricing, rewards, approval or investment results. Availability can differ by residence, legal entity and product, so no regional access is assumed from language or branding alone.
